Amzer Jelly Silicon Case for the Google Nexus 7

The Nexus 7 has been out for a few months now and has gained plenty of traction; with the quality construction and consistent performance you really can’t ask for a better bang for your buck. Because the device is so widely accepted, many case manufacturing companies have started shipping out products for the tablet. One of the first to come out with a decent lineup is Amzer: and if you take a look at any of the reviews on Amazon, they push out some quality products. Today we’re taking a quick look at the Jelly case for the Nexus 7 and just how much quality you’ll get for the price you pay.

Quality product without breaking the bank

Whenever I purchase a new product I always scope out some of my favorite brands for release dates and what they’re going to look like. We’ve used Amzer in the past and have been generally pretty happy with the product. The Jelly case provides the typical design and protection that you would expect out of a thick silicon skin; consisting of a solid one-piece design, the case is fairly easy to install and feels great on the hands due to the lack of hard plastic or multiple seams.

Right off the bat you can tell that the case provides the kind of protection you’re looking for, without obstructing the many ports and features that come stock with the Nexus. As far as access goes, the cutouts are large enough for pretty much any size cable you can use for both the USB and audio port. The case also includes a perfect sized cutout for the speaker, and slightly raised rubber buttons for the power and audio buttons. For some reason, it also includes a cutout for the currently useless (and probably useless while inside the case anyway) 4-pin adapter.

Build

While I said the case provide the typical protection of a silicon skin, that might not be the case. The design of the case actually adds some extra protection where you usually would need it most. The “X” style on the back of the case extends to the corners and across to the front which provides corner protection similar to the Ballistic cases. Unfortunately, the “X” is a smooth rubber compared to the textured rubber around it which leaves the device a bit difficult to hold in portrait, but adds additional grip and comfort in landscape.

There’s not a whole lot to say about the case because it’s generally pretty simple in design. Installation is easy enough by simply sliding it in and pulling the corners over the top. The thickness of the case keeps the screen a good quarter of an inch off of whatever surface you lay it on, or drop it on, to help keep any damage from occurring.

Overall

After using the case for a few days, I can safely say that I prefer it over most folio cases, although it doesn’t offer the screen protection that they do. Similar to the device itself, for the price you really can’t go wrong. The Jelly case is available for $20 off of Amazon and is worth every penny. Definitely be sure to check it out if you’re looking for a cheap, but high quality, skin case. You can check out some more images in the gallery below.

  • Excellent build quality, as we’ve seen with many of Amzer’s previous products
  • A thick and sturdy construction which should do a great job of protecting
  • It does add a little bit of bulk, but the added bulk actually feels beneficial to the thinness of the device when using it in landscape, making gaming easier on the hands
  • For a skin case, you can’t go wrong with how much protection it offers
  • The case in general adds excellent protection, and the “X” on the back provides additional protection to the corners where it’s usually needed most
  • For a high-quality tablet case, $20 really isn’t too much to ask for
  • Worth it?
    no yes

May I ask: Do the edges of the silicone case go right up to all 4 edges of the touchscreen? I ask mainly worried that the edges of the opening will interfere with pulling down the notification bar & other functions like maneuvering the thin scroll slider on the right-hand side of webpages. Thanks in advance for your firat-hand experience.
