As an avid Reddit user the selection of decent Reddit apps has been pretty bare to say the least, which is surprising when you look at just how many people use Reddit. Anyways, over the past few months a few contenders have really shone through and have provided great alternatives to viewing Reddit in the stock browser. BaconReader by OneLouder Apps (the same team who brought you FriendCaster and Tweetcaster) has really proven to be one of the better options. Some negative reviews about the app frequently crashing had kept me from downloading it in the past but, whatever was causing the problems was fixed in the latest patch and the ratings reflected that. So, after buying the premium version I dove in to see what this Reddit app had to offer.
Even though the app doesn’t use a holo theme you will not be disappointed how BaconReader looks aesthetically. The color palette used is really easy on the eyes and creates an overall pleasurable viewing experience even after extended periods of time. This app packs a lot of functionality into it. When viewing a subreddit you can swipe across the news story to reveal functions such as upvote, downvote, view comments, author profile and the URL. Aside from that if you simply tap on the title it will bring you to the comments and tapping on the picture will open up the full size image. All of this allows you to easily and quickly navigate through your subscribed subreddits.

Alongside these tools you can easily view your profile and see your statistics and badges. Below these is your recent submissions and comments. Browsing just seems cleaner in BaconReader than most of the other Reddit apps, everything is very well presented. Menus for sending messages, viewing your inbox and posting new submissions retain their usability without any complexity.

The app even includes a widget you can put on your homepage, you can choose the destination of the subreddit it pulls from and decide if you prefer new submissions or whatever is hot. Every few seconds it will cycle through the submissions and simply tapping on a title will open it in the BaconReader app. The premium version of the app will run you $1.99 or you can just install the free option if you don’t mind the ads.
