Indie Apps of the Week – BugMeNot

August 8, 2012 By Trevor Caudill Leave a Comment

So far our Indie Apps of the Week section has been an excellent way for us to meet small time developers. We have already received many submissions from these newer developers and developers who just need publicity in general. Today I’m going to be taking a look at BugMeNot for Android. This app sports a nice holo theme and provides complete access to the popular BugMeNot database.

For those who aren’t familiar with the service BugMeNot provides, here’s a little background. BugMeNot is a database of user submitted accounts that anyone can use to bypass sites that require registration to view content. In theory, you can easily grab one of these public accounts, log in and view whatever content you need to. I say “In theory” because that’s one of the problems with this service, most of the time the accounts that are provided don not work. Usually that means someone has been inconsiderate enough to claim that account for themselves. None of this should undermine what the developer has done though.

BugMeNot for Android is developed by Giorgi Dalakishvili. This application is very simple to navigate and almost self explanatory when opened. There’s a large search bar on the top and you simply have to enter in the URL of the site you’re hoping to find a log in for. BugMeNot for Android will grab results from the BugMeNot database, you will then be displayed with a list of accounts ranked in descending order based off of success rates. Conveniently there are copy buttons positioned next to each username and password. Intuitively, BugMeNot for Android incorporates the share feature. When using a browser, such as Google Chrome, you can simply share the site to BugMeNot and immediately see if it has any usable usernames and passwords. Afterwords the sites will be conveniently stored on the front page of the app under history for quick access in the future. In addition, aesthetically BugMeNot for Android does a great job of following the Android UI Guidelines with a sleek holo theme that lets you choose between three different themes.

Overall if you’re a fan of the BugMeNot database then you should definitely give this application a try. It can be a bit frustrating at times to try to find a login that works, but that has nothing to do with the developer or the application. There’s a Play Store link at the bottom so head on over, check it out and let him know what you think.
