Indie Apps of the Week – Social Advanced

Let’s face it, as much as we try to get away from social networks we keep being brought back by funny posts, moronic people, and images reposted from Reddit. When we get the time to actually read through this, we generally don’t want to have to spend 30 minutes sorting through the garbage to find some good stuff. Indie developer Matt Garnes has developed a lightweight application that is designed to pull tags and the most popular posts directly to your phone: saving you the time of having to do it yourself.

Social Advanced – The best way to access the worst social network without actually  accessing it

Trends, Moods, popularity. It’s Facebook , Fast.

We all know that the Facebook application on Android is god awful, with some of the other replacements not too far behind. Matt has decided create a simple yet effective application which allows us to skip the unnecessary browsing, and get straight to the good stuff. The interface consists of 4 tabs which include trending words, popular posts, the moods of users, and the settings menu. The trending tag is something similar to a word cloud that you would see on a website, giving you a brief overview of the most used words on Facebook and the ability to quickly find which posts they were. Popular posts, the most convenient of the tabs to me, provides you with the 10 most popular posts on your Facebook with the post and post details shown at the bottom; the design allows you to press on the post and quickly comment or like without having to leave the application. The Moods tab (pro only) analyzes your posts to see all the general feelings of your friends:

Exclusively in Social Advanced Pro, the ability to view the moods of your Facebook friends is included. Right away you can see who is Happy, Sad, In Love, or Angry with the touch of a button. This way, you can skip to just the kind of posts you want to read. You can ignore all your sad friends, or console them. You can see all the posts made by happy friends! Or see who is really pissed off. It’s up to you!

The settings tab gives you access to only one option really – the time frame that you want Social Advanced to analyze. While I believe the application in general is useful and helpful, I can’t help but wish there were some more settings specifically for how many popular posts I would like it to show ( I wouldn’t mind having the top 20 or so). I’m sure the application is still in its infancy so we’re bound to see some more features implemented in the future (ICS styling and tab system would be awesome!)

Social Advanced is available for free off of the Play Store for any users who would like to simplify the social stalking experience. There is also a Pro version which gives you access to the Moods tab. Be sure to take the application out for a test drive and drop some great comments in the ratings. Any ideas you have would be greatly appreciated:

I am always looking to add new features. If there is an advanced Facebook feature that you want to be able to do, email me at socialadvanced@gmail.com to request it. Take control of your Facebook with Social Advanced.
