While there’s not many apps I will straight up complain about having an ad in them, this is definitely one of them. POWOW Messaging is a wonderful looking application (thanks to it’s most recent update yesterday) which provides quite a bit of functionality, but costs a pretty solid amount of money: in return, it removes one ad. That’s it.
Finally a nice replacement for the stock messaging app
While I absolutely love ICS and the styling behind it, ever since using custom ROMs I’ve been having issues with notifications and crashes on the messaging application; I’m aware that I take that risk by doing so, and continue to use them because the additional functionality behind them is incredible. POWOW released the new update yesterday polishing the application and making it a genuinely great looking app. The updated interface brings it up to par with the new ICS guidelines with a fairly bad color palette, but nonetheless looks pretty good.
Many of the other SMS apps on the market offer quite a few features, but look pretty dated. POWOW on the other hand is a nice middle ground with a plethora of features and a nice new interface. Some of the many features include group messaging, Zip It (a feature also seen in Slices), Pop-up notifications, quick access to the voice input, and a nice little ad that shows up in every chat thread. While I personally don’t use Group messaging, many people have a good use for it and that’s great that it is included. Individual, group, and zipped threads are separated to help keep you from texting embarrassing things to people you didn’t mean to.
A little more info on the thread features
POWOW breaks down your messaging app into a multi-feature app by giving you various columns consisting of a few different tabs: favorites tab, which allows you to favorite certain threads for easy access on the first column; All tab, self explanatory; Groups, giving you access to only group messages; individual, only individual obviously; and the zipped tab, the zip tab is a tab which allows you to mute or block specific contacts and threads from receiving notifications, while still allowing you to send and receive text messages. The many tabs make messaging easier on the user thanks to the automatic sorting and favorite system.
While I’m enjoying the application and will continue to use it for some time thanks to it’s stability and additional features, I can’t help but feel that $5 for an ad-free version of an app is a bit expensive (although OneLouder’s style). Although it’s an extremely useful application for me and I’ll end up getting it soon, that’s a higher-priced application on the market – and more than some people want to pay. The free version offers you all the features and is available on Google Play if you want to take a look. If you have a way of… removing ads.. then it’s not bad at all. Check it out and support OneLouder if it interests you.
