While I am not too fond of the many accessories that Sony has currently released, there is no doubt in my mind that they are on the right track. The Smartwatch, Smart wireless headset, among other accessories by them are not a bad idea – just horribly implemented for the time being. The software for managing these pieces of hardware just got a massive update which makes the application useful for everyone, even if you don’t own one of their products.
A great update with hopefully more to come
Sony Smart Connect, formerly Liveware Manager, received a large update on the 7th which updated it to ICS standards and added loads of new automation features and functions.
Many of these features have already proved useful even when not utilizing a piece of Sony hardware. Some of the many features include preconfigured smart actions, headphone/charger/Bluetooth detection for custom launch options, and multiple variable execution when the set actions launch.
If you have played with Tasker or other applications similar to that, and just could not get the hang of it or just want a more simple application, this is just the app for you. Smart Connect is essentially a dumbed down version of Tasker with the management software readily available for those who do own Sony Hardware. Among the many features, you can set multiple profiles activated during a specific time and action. For example: If you plug in your phone from 10PM and 6AM then you can use Smart Connect to tell your phone to go to silent, launch an application, switch off Bluetooth, and many more. This easy level of automation can assist you in many ways.
Save yourself the trouble of tedious settings and tweaks
My two current profiles set are: tell the phone to go to silent when plugged in at night (as stated in the previous paragraph), and to launch Play Music, silence my phone, and turn off wifi when I connect my Bluetooth headset – saving me the trouble of having to do all that manually when I want to go for a run. While the application is not nearly as in depth as the many others, this does allow nearly anyone to set quick profiles and actions to be done without a long tutorial.
Smart Connect is available off Google Play for any device on which you feel like installing it. While there are some additional features for the Smartwatch and whatnot, you are by no means limited with what you can do with the standard app. You can see in this screenshot that there are already many actions that can be customized, with more likely coming in the future. Check out the application and see if you can find some use out of the features included.
