TouchType Demo's SwiftKey App for Android 3.0 Tablets

If you plan on getting a new tablet sporting Honeycomb here in the near future, then you would probably be interested in a nifty little application called Swiftkey. This keyboard app divides up your standard QWERTY keyboard into 3 sections. With letters taking both the left and right sides, and numbers in the middle, this will make typing on your 10-inch tablet much more convenient and hassle free. While your thumbs will do all the work with SwiftKey, this application also still brings us word prediction. Also split into 3 sections, SwiftKey’s word prediction will display the best guess, which just by hitting the space bar- will automatically enter it for you, along with it’s next best guess on the right, and intended words on the left.

TouchType is hoping to have SwiftKey available in Beta form not long after Mobile World Congress this month, and then a final version in April. Check out the short clilp of SwiftKey in action below.

Firefox Mobile 4 Beta 4 Now Available for Android

Anyone who’s been using, or keeping tabs on Firefox Mobile for Android should probably know that even though the browser has come a long way since the Fennec days, it’s still very much in the Beta stage. Now, Mozilla has just released Firefox Mobile 4 Beta 4 for Android 2.1 and higher.

The new beta is anything but small in size, at approximately 13.70 MB, it’s a huge heffer compared to Firefox’s competitors such as Dolphin (3.09 MB) and Opera Mini (1.76 MB). Looking past the small aspect of file size, the new Beta 4 brings improvements such as faster page load times, improved JavaScript handling, reduced memory usage, and support for restartless add-ons. So far it’s been recorded that JacaScript renders much faster on the Firefox Beta 4 than the default browser on Android.

If you’re in the Market for a good mobile browser, than look no further than Firefox Mobile. It’s the browser we’ve all come to know, trust and love over the years and now it’s finally being enhanced on our Android devices.

Google Translate's Birthday Brings an Alpha Version of Conversation Mode

If you remember, back during the IFA show in 2010, we heard Google’s announcement about Google Translate. It’s been about a year for the application, and while it’s still very much in it’s “Beta” stage, they’ve released a new update with a number of UI tweaks along with an alpha version of “Conversation Mode”. This feature will enable two speakers of different languages to talk to each other, while Google gives real-time translations of both languages. Pretty neat, huh? Well, don’t get too excited because this alpha version only supports English and Spanish currently, so we may have a bit of time before we see any real enhancements to more languages. But hey, that’s why they labeled it as “alpha” isn’t it?

What Firefox Engineer’s are now saying is that we can definitely expect a full fledged Firefox Beta to hit the Android Market at some point this month. With all the hype that surrounds this mobile browser, we hope that it certainly lives up to its expectations. Can we say, about time?

ThickButttons now in Market with Beta 0.9

My girl Anisi has been telling me about this app for weeks now. I hadn’t been able to find it to test it out, but now that it got an update they put it on the market, and for FREE! So clearly I had to try it. I must say, Anisi…you were right, this app kills! An avid lover of Swype, I truly didn’t think I would care much about other keyboards. I go through phases though of what works best for me at the time and this is very functional for anyone who has big hands, and let’s face it who really has small enough fingertips for any on-screen keyboard?

They did make some improvements in this version (for those of you who are already avid users). In edition to English you can now type in Italian, French, German, and Spanish. If you are running Froyo (2.2), voice input is enabled. When you rotate the phone to landscape the keyboard has been improved to work with it along with other performance improvements. Chekc it out and let us know where you stand on the touchscreen text input battle!

Opera Mobile 10.1 Beta hits Android Market

Maybe it’s just a coincidence that only a few days after Firefox’s newest Mobile Beta was launched we’d see Opera’s Mobile 10.1 Beta. But on the other hand, these two seem to be competing for the title of most efficient Android browser. Opera Mobile 10.1 offers a handful of sweet features that are sure to strike the interest of all DroidNerds.

 • SVG support
 • Sync your bookmarks across devices with Opera Link
 • Ability to be set as the default browser
 • Easy tab management with visual tabs
 • Geolocation support
 • Opera Presto rendering engine

The company claims that Opera Mobile offers faster page loading and fluid panning than any other mobile browser on the market. Another new feature is Speed Dial, which allows quick and easy access to your favorite web pages while the built-in password manager saves you from having to go through the redundant process of logging in each time you visit your sites. We’re interested to see how Opera Mobile 10.1 and Firefox Mobile 4 compare to each other. I think I see a speed and efficiency test coming to fruition! Take a peek at the short video above for a little hands-on preview.
