Skype for Android Offers Video Calling…Kind of

Skype video chat has finally made its way to the Android application, but has a taken after Hulu and will only be available for a handful of phones.

The phones that will support Skype video chat as of right now include:

-HTC Desire S
-Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo
-Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro
-Google Nexus S

The list isn’t very impressive, and it seems like it’s too little too late. But, Skype promises they’ll be adding more devices “very soon.”

In addition to video chat, Skype has redesigned the application. The menu makes navigation easier; customers can manage their profile and account, their contacts, and share statuses.

Motorola Atrix 4G Rolls Out 4.1.83 Update

As some of you Motorola Atrix users may have noticed, there was a pop on your screen for an update to 4.1.83. So you might ask, what will this update do for my phone?

In this update it will increase data speeds and limit interruptions on data connections. There are improvements to prevent screen freezes. Also there are improved push email notification features as well as being able to sign in to MotoBlur and Youtube with the same email. They have also added better updating to the Happenings MotoBlur Widget to ensure that you will receive all of your social network information as fast as possible. The last thing mentioned was the improvements made to give a more seamless experience when placing and receiving phone calls.

Video Chatting On The Android

Since the release of Skype on the Android platform, many users have been eagerly awaiting the update for video chat on our devices. While Skype still hasn’t provided, other companies have stepped up to take their place. To be more specific, Qik and Yahoo have both released applications which allow for cross platform video chatting. Qik has the capability to chat from both Android to iOS devices seamlessly (proposing they both have cameras). Like Qik, Yahoo also is able to use video chat between the two different operating systems as well as from Android or iOS to PC. You must have the Yahoo Messenger application installed on your computer, but once signed in you can communicate with anyone who is using a mobile device by “calling” their phone. While the Qik application offers a few bonuses that Yahoo doesn’t, such as recording and uploading videos to their service, Yahoo remains in the game with a seamless communication tool between your devices including file and photo sharing.

These are just two of the various video chat applications that are making their way onto the android market. Although these applications are optimized for front-facing cameras, they are compatible with rear-facing cameras. If you don’t have a front-facing camera, like myself, then hopefully you have a mirror nearby to make up for it.

Skype For Android Gets Security Update

Due to the security hole found in Skype for Android a week ago, many users have stopped using Skype and others have uninstalled it completely. The security leak allowed various unencrypted chat logs and user information to be accessed off the SD card in the phone. Skype responded to the flaw and released an update today that both plugs the security hole and even threw in an added bonus.

The update took the restrictions off of the Skype app to allow free calls from one Skype client to another from both Wifi and 3G, which was previously only enabled from Wifi; Along with a few other bug fixes and speed improvements. Make sure you have a compatible data plan, because it will use a large amount of data in the process.

HTC Thunderbolt Will Lack Mobile Hotspot and amp; Skype Video Chat for Launch

Excited about the new HTC Thunderbolt lauching on Verizon in the very new future? We wouldn’t blame you if you were. But Verizon has announced some disheartening news that may leave many of you looking forward to the most exciting features a little ticked off. Specifically, the mobile hotspot feature, which allows you to host a hotspot for up to 8 devices will not be available when the device is launched, nor will the video chat feature for Skype be ready either. This leaves the question, “Why would Verizon leave us hanging like this?” Unfortunately we don’t have the answers to some of life’s biggest questions, but what we do know is that Big Red won’t waste any time getting both of these features up and running right after the Thunderbolt see it’s debut, so there’s no reason to panic too much.

Skype gets Android Update to 1.0.1

Skype has released an update for the Android app. The update should help smooth out some of the bugs and bring the app to more devices. It looks like there will still be problems for the Galaxy S line up however. The list of improvements quoted from the Skype blog is below:

* 320*240 and 240*400 screen resolutions are now supported.
* Hardware back key is now supported.
* Signing out from Skype now exits Skype.
* Reduced power consumption in idle mode.
* Improved login stability and behavior.
* Improved performance with large contact lists.
* Reduced application size.
* General bug fixes.

You can get the update in the Market or by going to skype.com/m on your device. It’s not perfect yet, however definite upgrades have been made.

Verizon Galaxy Tab deprives us of Skype, NFL Mobile and V Cast Video

Well this is rather disheartening. It appears that the Verizon branded Samsung Galaxy Tab won’t be sporting NFL Mobile or V Cast Video. And if that wasn’t enough to make your teeth clench, Verizon is depriving us of Skype too. How could they? We’re not exactly sure, but we’re hoping this is just a temporary flaw for the release of the Galaxy Tab and nothing permanent. Take a peek at the VZW document above for a little more insight.

Fail of the Week! Skype App For Android but not Galaxy S

So as many of you know, Skype released its all new Android app to the market. Well for a lot of people, you will find that you can download it but its, well, just not for you… not only the fact that the application will only run on Android 2.1 or higher, but it doesn’t work with the Galaxy S series yet either. For you Galaxy S folks, it will only let you download and run the app but when it comes to signing in, all hope is gone!

So i have to wonder, will android users that cant use the Skype app switch to Fring? As it stands I believe Fring is now offering a call out program as well. I guess we will see how everything pans out!

Fring hits Android Market as well

Want free video calls and live chat? Skype not really working for you like you thought it would? Looks to me that there is no coincidence Fring has annouced an app in the Android Market. Its free to download and calls are only $0.01 per minuet for international calling. Now that’s a low price! (I know!) I will check it out and let you know what I think.
