Verizon Sony Xperia Play Pre-Purchase Arrives 2 Days Early

Have you been eagerly awaiting the Sony Xperia PLAY? Now’s your chance to get it before it’s even released in stores. Don’t know what it is? The new Sony phone is the Playstation certified Android device running 2.3 Gingerbread: it boasts a slide-out gamepad with dual touch thumbpads for a console like gaming experience in your pocket.

We ordered the PLAY this past Sunday and it arrived Tuesday, 2 days before the official release date to customers in stores. The Xperia is $199.99 with a two year upgrade and is currently available to the public for preorder, and will be available in stores on the 26th. Check out the Verizon website here for more information on the product as well as where you can purchase and preorder the device.

Xperia Play for Verizon Heads to Stores This Month

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play for Verizon kicks off with pre-orders today, May 19th. It’ll become available in stores on the 26th of this month. It’s $199.99 (with a nice 2 year contract slapped on it, as expected) and comes packed with games preloaded on the device: Madden NFL 11, Asphalt 6: Adrenaline, Tetris, Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior, The Sims 3, Crash Bandicoot, and Star Battalion.

Some specs (as you probably know) include Gingerbread (2.3), a 4-inch Multitouch 854 x 480 LCD display, 512 MB of RAM, 5 mega-pixel camera and VGA front-facing camera, and a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon II processor.

Sony Plans on Two Android Tablets This Year

This next bit of info i’m sure comes as no surprise.

Sony finally announced that it too is diving head first into the tablet pool, informing everyone of its plans to bring out not one, but two Android Honeycomb (3.0) tablets by this fall.

The two models, dubbed S1 and S2, come in two different designs; a nearly traditional slate with a wedged back and 9.4 inch (1280×800 resolution) display, and a clamped folding model with dual 5.5 inch screens that can be used separately or combined into one.

The S1 comes with front and rear facing cameras, and the S2 also comes with two featured cameras.

Both will support Wi-Fi and 3G and 4G wireless networks and will be powered by Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor.

A more specific date has not been released, and there is no hint at a price yet.

New App Channel By Sony Ericcson on Android Market

Sony Ericcson has officially launched a dedicated app page for their devices. The page will replace the standard “My Apps” link with “Sony Ericsson” on the Android Market. The “My App” section won’t disappear; instead it will be accessible through the menu key.

According to Sony Ericcson’s blog, the point of this channel is to offer recommendations to help provide the “most entertaining” Sony Ericcson experience, inform users of original Sony Ericcson apps, send exclusive content and deals solely for Sony Ericcson customers, and to promote Sony Ericcson’s partners’ games and apps.

The screenshot above shows who they highly suggest.

…who is this supposed to be helping again?

Android Mascot Breaks it Down at Xperia Arc Promo

Brace yourselves for some of the most epic dance moves that you’ll probably ever witness an Android Robot pull off. Appearing to be a promotion for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc, this Android puts even Napoleon Dynamite to shame with his mad skills on stage. Well done, Andy. Well done.

Sony Ericsson Brings Xperia Play to CTIA

We headed to Sony Ericsson’s booth here at CTIA in Orlando to get a closer look at the Xperia Play (R800x) and all of its gaming greatness.

While we had a chance to tinker with the device at CES earlier this year, it was very buggy to say the least, and we hoped to see an improvement in the Xperia Play’s performance, and thankfully that’s exactly what we experienced this time around.

Running with the latest mobile version of Android, 2.3 (Gingerbread), it’s the world’s first Playstation certified Smartphone that features the super-cool dedicated gaming controller as part of the device. The Xperia Play also features a VGA front facing camera and a 5-megapixel camera on the back with auto focus and LED flash to go along with that 2.3 goodness.

The Xperia Play was much more responsive as a whole, and not to mention the loading time on the pre-loaded games were a lot quicker than originally anticipated.

The games that you can expect on this device are:

· Madden NFL 11 (Electronic Arts)
· Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior (Digital Legends)
· Asphalt 6: Adrenaline (Gameloft)
· Star Battalion (Gameloft)
· The Sims 3 (Electronic Art
· Tetris (Electronic Arts)

Every game that we saw this device run had no problems with load times, performance or video quality. We assume the Qualcomm Snapdragon II 8655 1GHz CPU with Graphical Processor Adreno 205 plays a major role in bringing that performance to the level that it’s at.

The Xperia Play comes with an 8GB microSD card, and is capable of taking up to a 32GB card.
While the games that will be optimized for the Xperia Play will still be readily available on the Android Market as well as Verizon’s VCast Apps, when I questioned the SE rep about when an official launch of the Playstation Suite would arrive, he seemed confident that it wouldn’t be until Q4 of this year that we’d see that software implemented.

Xperia Play to Launch on O2 UK and amp; Vodafone

We’ve seen just about all there is to see of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play as far as the hardware and software goes, minus a few details here and there. What we haven’t seen yet, however, is a clarification of what carriers we can expect the Xperia Play to land on. Interestingly enough, O2 UK has recently tweeted that the Xperia Play is most definitely going to be available to their customers. On top of that, Pocket-Lint has “exclusively confirmed” that Vodafone customers will also be getting the Xperia Play when launched.

Now, don’t get me wrong… this is fantastic news. But, how about some North America love SE?

Xperia Play to be Officially Announced February 13th

It’s been the worst kept secret of an Android smartphone to date, and until now the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play has been been handled only by the luckiest of folks. Ericsson’s Facebook page posted an announcement regarding the Playstationesque Phone today stating they will make the device official on February 13th, one day before Mobile World Congress where we originally thought SE would show off the device. Hopefully we’ll see some improvements to the Xperia Play, considering all of the prototypes we’ve seen on video so far have been seriously lacking in functionality.

All we can say is, it’s about damn time.

Sony Xperia Play commercial is out, heads are being scratched [VIDEO]

Hmmm, this is a tricky one, I just don’t know what to think? Today a commercial has popped up YouTube from the Norwegian Android website, DroidNYTT, about the Sony Xperia Play. The commercial takes place in a dark, sketchy, back-alley building while a “surgeon” attaches human thumbs onto an Android. I understand what there kinda getting at but it does seem to create a really creepy atmosphere. Here’s the video to check out and see if you can understand.

Sony Ericsson's Financial Results for 2010 a Huge Let Down

Sony’s released their official financial results for Q4 of 2010, and as you could imagine… it’s really not as impressive as any of their competitors. With the devices such as the Xperia X10, X10 Mini, X10 Mini Pro, and X8 being sold worldwide, the unfortunate fact of the matter is that most of these units are still stuck on the prehistoric OS that is Android 1.6. Worst of all, they’ll likely never see an update to 2.1. Their pre-tax profit for Q4 of 2010 was €35 million. We can only assume that with the upcoming Xperia Arc and Xperia Play, that these numbers will make a turnaround for the first half of 2011.
