Motorola Xoom Ice Cream Sandwich – Second Look – Updated Build

Not even an hour later razorbladex401 works his miracle of compiling the AOSP bits and has developed a near perfect build. And when we say Near Perfect, we mean it. Besides the non-functioning camera, this version of ICS for the Motorola Xoom Wifi is crazy fast. Multitasking through the applications and browsing the internet felt like we were using a whole new device, perhaps a device running a quad core. Seriously folks, ICS is no joke when it comes to updating all of our old devices and making them new again. Everything works as advertised including the resizable widgets, market and other google apps (via a flashable .zip), and many games. The green flashing screen has already been addressed and fixed and is looking to be a more stable build by the minute.

We tested a few of the various applications included as well as installing Apparatus and they all ran even smoother than expected. Google has really outdone themselves this time around. [Read more...]

Motorola Xoom Ice Cream Sandwich – First Look

As you all may have heard the Android 4.0.3 sources were uploaded to the AOSP servers today which most took as being the update for the Nexus S; however, it also included sources for the Motorola Xoom Wifi and Motorola Xoom 3G devices. Thanks to XDA user razorbladex401 we have a introductory look at Ice Cream Sandwhich on the device! You can check out our video here to see a quick preview. [Read more...]

Motorola XOOM Wifi Tablet gets Android Movies

For the XOOM Wifi owners hoping to catch movies on the Android Market, your wait is now over. Motorola tweeted that that the movies are officially available. Grab the Google Video app first then and have access to thousands of movies starting at $1.99.

But, as I mentioned about a month ago, rooted devices are banned from the application. This ban was implemented to avoid pirating movies.

You can download the Google Video app here to get started.

Overclocking Motorola Xoom To 1.7Ghz Dual Core

Today we rooted and flashed a custom kernel onto our Motorola Xoom to unlock the full potential of the hardware which includes external SD card support as well as overclocking the Dual core CPU to 1.7Ghz .Thanks to the files and guide provided by XDA, we were able to successfully install the Tiamat kernel onto the Xoom which allows for the most potential out of the Tegra 2 chip. There have been numerous stress tests done on the chip and it is running stable at 1.7Ghz which is “probably as far as the Tegra chip will go.” Although the kernel does not work on some devices and can cause hangs, you can always use the 1.6Ghz overclock which should work better and is still a huge improvement over the stock 1.0. Another feature included is the charging LED is now active while the device is on and charging, whereas before the LED would only be on if the device was powered off.

We ran a Quadrant test benchmark on it to see how it stacked up against other phones and dual core devices and it ousted every Android device on the market, as expected. The Motorola Atrix and the Xoom got roughly 2500 on a benchmark score when ran at stock speeds; after rooting and installing the Tiamat kernel the benchmark score reached 4108! If the Xoom was having ANY difficulty running multiple applications before, it has been fixed entirely with this update.

You can visit the XDA website below to read the official thread on flashing, unlocking, and rooting your device. As always, be extremely careful as this has the possibility to brick your device (make it a really nice 26 ounce paperweight) if the proper steps are not followed. We nor XDA are responsible for anything that happens to your device, use at own risk! These posts are aimed towards the 3G Verizon Xoom, not the Wifi version.

SetCPU Forum post

Engadget has a post on their website which has a response from Motorola in regards to have an unlocked and rooted device when the 4G LTE upgrade comes around; Motorola states that it is not an issue and if any Xoom that is sent in for the upgrade will receive the installation of the 4G modem no matter what, even if they are unable to install the “software” for it basically saying “if you can hack your own software onto it, you can put ours on it too.”

App Review: Thumb Keyboard (For phone or tablet)

Just released out of beta, Thumb Keyboard 4.1 has been updated with a lot of new tools and layouts to personalize your typing experience to the greatest potential on your phone, or your tablet. I tested the keyboard on the Motorola Xoom and the Samsung Captivate to ensure that it lives up to its claim: And it certainly does. Thumb keyboard does not sport only the split keyboard design but a normal keyboard layout as well. With a gingerbread theme on it (comes with the application) you can’t even tell a difference. It performs just like it and you can switch between the ergonomically designed split and the normal with just a tap of the settings key.

(Split Landscape Keyboard)

(Split Portrait Keyboard)

(One Hand Keyboard, left side of screen is dead zone to hold onto)

(And the full size keyboard, notice the push pin on the keyboard, that is the one-click text enter to remember websites, email, or passwords)

Where the application really stands out though is the tablet interface; the “10inch/9inch” tablet interface which is included is completely customizable like the rest but also separates the keys so you can type without having to stretch your hands or lay the tablet down to type efficiently on the keyboard. It comes with a full keyboard, similar to the stock one; a “one handed keyboard” where the left half of the screen is blank so you can hold it and type with the right hand; or there is the split layout, which is the star of the app. The split has the keyboard resized so that you can reach all of the alphabet keys without having to move your hands, but also gives a virtual numpad and arrow keys their own section in the center for convenience . They basically crammed a full size keyboard onto the tablet without losing efficiency or a single key.

(Here’s one of the Phone Thumb Keyboard landscape)

The Good – Er, The Great:
• Comes with multiple layouts ( 7 total) designed for phones, 7” tablets, and 9”/10” tablets
• Various themes including Honeycomb, Gingerbread, iPad, And various others
• Customizable keys to auto input text (save emails, passwords, or websites) with one click
• Multi-touch and very responsive
• Fully customizable – ability to change width and height of keys
• Cheap: low price of $2.49 on the market
• User dictionary
• Voice input

The Not So Good:
• It doesn’t read my mind to type for me

The application deserves a full 5 stars on the market and is well worth the $2.49 price tag on it. You can purchase the application and see some more information as well as screenshots of the various other layouts and themes here.

Eager To Watch Hulu On Your Xoom?

XDA member bigrushdog just might have found the solution. According to XDA, there is a hidden file inside the Flash 10.3 update which enables the Xoom to use Hulu on their device; if you have the new 3.1 update hardware acceleration has been included in the latest update, and it really helps. All you have to do is uninstall the current version of Flash, and install the XDA version: Simple.

Another side note, your device must be enabled to be viewed as a Desktop device, so you need to change your UA string to desktop, or just use another browser where you can change it (Dolphin HD works.) Not confirmed yet, but your device is recommended to be running Android Honeycomb 3.1 or it is possible this fix will not work. Check out the thread here to get the .apk and read more on it.

Looking For A Keyboard For Your Android Device?

Got the email from Motorola this past week and haven’t been able to try out all the new features like the hardware keyboard and mouse? If you’re on a budget and don’t feel like shelling out $75 for a bluetooth keyboard, because it’s only going to be used at home, then you can take this $3.89 solution from Amazon. The $4, and includes free shipping, female to male adapter will open up a whole world of possibilites. You can connect Keyboards, controllers, cameras, mice, and even flash drives (with a little hacking), and it only costs you 4$ to do it proposing you have some USB devices lying around. Check out the connector here and see if it’s worth the purchase to try it out.

High Performance Processors Being Brought To Android Tablets

Earlier this week ZiiLABS announced in a press release that they are making “Energy-Efficient Processors Optimized for High-Performance Android 3.0 Tablets.” This new line of ZMS-20 and ZMS-40 processors will be rocking 1.5 GHz Dual and Quad core models which will be turning these Honeycomb tablets into media Powerhouses. The announcement says that the new line of processors will be able to support up to 1080p HD playback, OpenGL 2.0, and HD video calling and recording. With some of the most recently released tablets on the market equipped with only a 1Ghz dual core, including the Motorola Xoom and the Asus Transformer, the 1.5Ghz processors are a nice jump ahead for the market. Although, if you already own a Xoom you can check out this guide on how to Overclock your Xoom to be a 1.5Ghz dual core tablet without to purchase a new one or hit yourself for not waiting for a better model.

As if the HD video wasn’t enough, the ZiiLABS processors will also feature hardware support for DDR3 RAM and HDMI 1.4 to further enhance the already sweet gaming and web browsing experience. You can take a look at the in depth specifications for the processors on the ZiiLABS home site and see the incredible hardware that is in store for the Android tablet market.
